Sports lesson at Olives...chaos but great!

Every Friday, Olives holds a sports event for the whole school. Last Friday we split the classes up into different groups. The older boys were sent to play football, the younger boys played volleyball and the girls played netball.

Fellow volunteers, Laura, Jamie and I took the girls to play netball, we set out a drill that works on passing and pivoting on your feet, then it was onto a game. We explained that netball is a non-contact game and that once you receive the ball you must stand still and pass the ball onto your team mates before being able to run again. They followed the rules for all of two minutes, before resorting to what looked more like a rugby match, but they were enjoying themselves so much that we gave up on the rules ourselves. All in all, a good day.

I’m your typical Kiwi, love a good rugby match, so it was great to see the girls getting so involved, even if it was supposed to be netball. Maybe next time we’ll have to try touch footy, we might get them to follow more of the rules, it should be interesting either way.

We’ll keep you posted on their improvements, maybe with more drills and their passion for winning at any cost, Kenya might give the Aussies a run for their money in the future; I say bring it on!!
