International Literacy Day Celebrations

International Literacy Day Celebrations

GVI joined the Bombolulu Adult Education team as they celebrated the annual International Literacy Day on in the Kisauni District, Mombasa.  The primary aim of this occasion is to acknowledge literacy groups which tackle the high rates of adult illiteracy within Kenya.  GVI have been working with the Bombolulu group since 2011, headed by the remarkable Madam Grace, assisting with English, Math and computer classes to the adults of Bombolulu and the surrounding areas.

Throughout the journey the woman sang songs and cheered creating an amazing atmosphere. Once arriving at the grounds, we were introduced to the other adult education groups over sodas.  Throughout the day there were numerous theatrical and humorous performances from the group members, and traditional Massai dancing and music. The closing ceremony saw the educational group leaders and members being awarded certificates recognising their participation and achievements, along with teaching equipment.  Overall a good day out, and amazing experience to observe the dynamics of other adult educational classes.
