Standard 2 receive a lesson in "sense of smell"
We started teaching Standard 2 at Olives Rehabilitation Centre today. In science we were teaching about the senses and we started with the sense of smell. We brought props into the classroom, including an onion, a banana, a lime, a tea bag, cinnamon, a carrot and some herbs.

We asked for volunteers to come forward and cover their eyes. They were to sniff the object and guess what it was. They all enjoyed guessing, especially when they were right, although sometimes they only knew the Swahili.

Saidi identified cinnamon but only knew the word in Swahili
To tie it all together, we worked on some sentences using the verb “to smell.” The students are very enthusiastic here, and it’s lovely to see how excited they get about their good marks.

All in all, it was a challenging but beautiful first day of teaching at Olives Rehabilitation Centre.
