Classroom Colour!

GVI volunteers have started a project in both schools to utilise the classroom walls as a learning tool displaying educational information in a fun, visual and communicative way. The children spend a huge portion of their day in the classroom, not only during lessons but break times as well, so they wanted to offer learning stimulation at all times to the children.

Initially they focused on Standard One and Two, selecting materials that would help the children to improve their reading and numeracy skills. GVI volunteers created a brightly painted word wall which displays key words that the children are currently covering in their lessons. There are 100 frequency words and 200 common words that children learn when first being taught to read. About 25 words at a time are displayed, which are changed on a regular basis and moved around to keep the children engaged. The same principle has been applied to the numeracy board with the focus being on timetables.

The volunteers are finding the boards a useful teaching aid and though these boards are currently only displayed in Standard One and Two, the volunteers often find children from older standards reading the boards and helping younger children to learn the words.

GVI volunteers are already working alongside the local teachers to produce boards for Standards 3 – 8 to incorporate learning material for all subjects. Mr Lucus - Head teacher at Olives said, “It is good to see colour in the classrooms and the teachers are very excited about being able to display work that will constantly be a learning source for the students.”
