Precious students love to read
A recent donation to Precious Vision Care Centre of reading books has inspired a whole new group of children to read - and enjoy it!
I have been volunteering in Mombasa since October and shortly after I arrived a shipment of books from the UK was delivered. This has impacted hugely on the childrens' lessons as they now have resources to use for their own personal study, such as encyclopedias. They love nothing more than to sit with a few friends and learn about tales of faraway lands.
The older students also value the story books as they can take them home to read and share with their friends and family. One of my students proudly showed me that she was already on page 63 after having only taken the book home the previous day. Another was so excited that she was reading her favourite parts aloud to me!
It is amazing to see how much the children appreciate everything that we took for granted when we were their age. The simple pleasure of browsing a selection of books and choosing one to read, had until recently, been impossible at the school. Precious has a lot more resources than it used to however, there is still a long way to go!
I have included a handwritten blog by Fatma, Standard 6 student (in photograph) writing about her school, Precious Vision Care Centre and the Enid Blyton novel she is currently enoying reading.
