It's no ordinary trip to the dump!!

The 'Dump school' at Kibrani.

Earlier this week Hannah and I (Elly Singleton) made a trip to Mombasa's dump, situated on the outskirts of Mombasa in a village called 'Kibarani'. We weren't there to have a look at the vast dumping ground of all of Mombasa's waste, but a small nursery school just across the road from the dump. Otherwise known as 'The Dump School'.

The school was set up 12 years ago by a young Dutch woman to give the disadvantaged children of Kibarani an opportunity to be rehabilitated into free schooling and medical care, and to be given a better quality of life. As opposed to what was before; living, eating, sleeping and even washing in a dump!

As Hannah and I walked up to the school consisting of three small classrooms and a tiny tin kitchen, we were swamped by beaming children in there colour coordinated uniforms, who certainly looked like they were having the time of there lives. We learned that the school ran a feeding programme consisting of 2 meals a day for the children of Kibarani as well as the school. They also provided free health care for each pupil. It was a humbling experience, although with little resources and only four teachers to over one hundred and forty excited kindergarten children, we were amazed to discover how well looked after each child was. Were are now excited about the new prospect of assisting in the development of Kibarani!

The tin kitchen feeding over 140 children...!!!
